Tree work in Teralba
A railway town assessed house by house
The Lake Macquarie heritage map takes in the Teralba Conservation Area, a conservation area of local significance. Its significance rests on the town's mining and railway history.
For the plan, council individually assessed the exterior of each property and classed it by what it adds to the town. A big tree in a front garden can be part of that picture, and council's online tree tools do not cover a heritage area, so approval is settled before anything is cut.
Teralba was one of four suburbs where soil and household dust samples were taken from homes, parks and schools in a lead study by the Newcastle Herald and Macquarie University. For a tree job, the soil a grinder churns up is the part to plan for: agree where the grindings and spoil go before the machine starts.

How it works
From the first message to a written quote
The council question is settled before any price, and nothing is booked until you have said yes to a quote in writing.
- 1
Tell us what the tree is doing
Where it stands, what it hangs over and what you would like done about it.

- 2
A contractor comes to see it
A tree contractor who covers your suburb looks at the tree, the access and what is underneath it.

- 3
The council question is answered
Your council, the tree's height and trunk, its distance from the house and the species decide whether a permit or an exemption applies.

- 4
You get it in writing
Scope, timber, stump and date on one page, and nothing is booked until you have said yes.

Teralba questions
Bushfire behind the town
Has bushfire come near Teralba?
In November 2012 a Lake Macquarie bushfire threatened properties in the suburb of Teralba, burning scrub until a southerly change helped the crews. Trees hanging over roofs on the bush side are the first to check.
Can a neighbour's branches be cut back?
In Lake Macquarie, native branches overhanging from next door can be pruned to the boundary as long as the pruning does not exceed 10% of the tree canopy. Anything heavier needs an application.
Who keeps the offcuts?
Council says boundary pruning offcuts are green waste, for your own green bin. They are not to be thrown back over onto the neighbour's land.
