Tree work in Minmi
Old coal country beside the village
Blue Gum Hills Regional Park, on the edge of Minmi, was mined for coal for well over a century. NSW National Parks says undulations and scars are still a feature of the landscape there.
The park service also warns that areas in the park are subject to mine subsidence. Ground like that can carry on into the yards closest to the bush.
The Minmi section of the Newcastle DCP asks for land stability to be assessed with particular regard for past mining and filling activities. Under a stump, the ground may not be what it looks like, so grinding depth is set on the visit.

Minmi questions
Creek corridors and heritage views
Can trees beside Minmi Creek be cleared?
The DCP says vegetation corridors are maintained or regenerated along creeks, so a tree on a creek bank is part of a corridor. Most of Minmi drains that way, on to the Hexham Wetlands, and removal there is a question for the council first.
What should go back in after a removal?
The Minmi controls say revegetation restores the diversity of indigenous species originally present. A local native is the replacement that fits.
Does the heritage village affect tree work?
It can. The DCP says views to identified heritage items are maintained where possible, and screen planting may be added. A tree that blocks or frames one of those views is worth talking through before it is touched.
