Tree work in New Lambton

Moving ground after the landslip

An independent geotechnical report found the slip in New Lambton is the largest residential landslip in Australian history. It followed two days of intense rain, with 198 millimetres falling on the night of the landslip.

Parts of the site have kept moving since, creeping by up to 14 millimetres each day in places. Trees inside the affected area are not a private job while engineers and the council deal with the slope.

Elsewhere in the suburb the jobs are ordinary ones. Still, a tree that starts to lean after heavy rain, or cracked soil around its roots, should be reported before anyone cuts.

New Lambton questions

Slope repairs, permits and dead trees

Can trees on the slip be removed one by one?

Not as a fix for the slope. The peer-reviewed report found the site cannot be remediated through isolated works and needs a whole-of-slope intervention. Trees inside that area wait on that plan.

How long does a council permit take?

The City of Newcastle says most applications are processed within 30 days. A tree in a heritage area can take longer, because it is referred to a heritage officer.

What if a tree is already dead?

State vegetation rules allow removal where the council is satisfied the tree is dying or dead and is not needed as habitat for native animals. The council has to agree first, so photos of the tree help.
