Tree work in Hinton

A heritage village between two rivers

Hinton is one of two Heritage Conservation Areas in Port Stephens, and the council's definition of a heritage item includes a tree. Older trees in the village can sit within a heritage setting, so consent is checked before one comes down.

The village sits near the confluence of the Hunter and Paterson rivers. River flat soil stays saturated long after the water goes down, which loosens roots and leaves the ground too soft for a truck.

Hinton questions

When the river cuts the village off

Can a tree job reach Hinton in a flood?

Not always. The SES says isolation of Hinton and the rural land around it can happen, sometimes lasting several days. A storm damaged tree may have to be made safe once access returns.

How bad has the flooding been?

When the Hunter reached minor flood level in March 2022, the water ended up cutting Hinton off from the rest of Port Stephens, and the SES delivered supplies by boat. In 2022 the local MP said the whole town was surrounded by flood waters.

Who decides on trees on rural land nearby?

For rural properties, Port Stephens names Hunter Local Land Services as the consent authority. Which body applies depends on how the land is zoned, so it is checked for the address.
