Tree work in Redhead

Two wildfires on the bush edge

The December 2025 Redhead fire started in bush that crews could not reach and had burned through more than 80 hectares by 6pm on 7 December. It was not the first one. The national parks fire history also maps a 2006-07 wildfire of about 209 hectares under the Redhead name.

For a yard on that edge, the useful work happens between fires: dead limbs off the roof, and fallen timber cleared from under the gums before summer.

Redhead questions

What council is doing to the dune

What is happening on the Redhead dune?

Council's plan uses earthmoving gear on the dune nearest the surf club to reduce its steepness and height by up to 3m, then lays jute mesh against the wind. It is public land and council's job.

Why did the beach works start with weeds?

The first stage was removing invasive bitou bush and moving sand off the facilities beside the surf club. Bitou in a private garden near the beach can go out with the green waste from a pruning job.

Do native gums need an application?

Lake Macquarie City Council says an application may be required before pruning or removing a native tree or Araucaria pine species on any private property. Most of the bush trees behind Redhead are native.
