Tree work in Rathmines
An old seaplane base by the lake
Rathmines Park, the former RAAF seaplane base, is listed in the State Heritage Inventory as a landscape covering 61 hectares. Its trees are part of a heritage listing on public land, so they are never part of a private quote.
The Lake Macquarie LEP also lists separate heritage items here, including the Christadelphian School, the bowling club and the holiday camp. On or beside one of those, tree work is handled differently from an ordinary yard.

How it works
From the first message to a written quote
The council question is settled before any price, and nothing is booked until you have said yes to a quote in writing.
- 1
Tell us what the tree is doing
Where it stands, what it hangs over and what you would like done about it.

- 2
A contractor comes to see it
A tree contractor who covers your suburb looks at the tree, the access and what is underneath it.

- 3
The council question is answered
Your council, the tree's height and trunk, its distance from the house and the species decide whether a permit or an exemption applies.

- 4
You get it in writing
Scope, timber, stump and date on one page, and nothing is booked until you have said yes.

Rathmines questions
Heritage approvals and the crown land
Can council's tree tools be used on a heritage property?
No. They do not cover a heritage item or a property in a heritage conservation area, where development application consent or approval from the NSW Government may be required.
Is the crown land bush managed for fire?
It is. Fire and Rescue NSW has run one of its biggest Lake Macquarie hazard reduction burns on a section of crown land in Rathmines, reducing the fuel load there.
Can I cut branches hanging over from next door?
If they are native, Lake Macquarie lets you prune them back to the boundary as long as the work does not exceed 10% of the tree canopy. The offcuts are green waste for your own bin, never thrown back over the fence.
