Tree work in Hamilton South
Large gardens in a planned suburb
The Hamilton South Garden Suburb heritage conservation area is made up of single houses on large allotments generally over 600 square metres, set back in landscaped front gardens. Big gardens grew big trees, and many of them are now close to their full size.
Houses here have side driveways with the car at the side or the rear, which is usually the way a machine reaches a tree in the back yard.
Heritage elements of the suburb include Parkway Avenue, Learmonth Park, small pocket parks, and the vegetated edges of Cottage Creek, along with its street trees.

How it works
From the first message to a written quote
The council question is settled before any price, and nothing is booked until you have said yes to a quote in writing.
- 1
Tell us what the tree is doing
Where it stands, what it hangs over and what you would like done about it.

- 2
A contractor comes to see it
A tree contractor who covers your suburb looks at the tree, the access and what is underneath it.

- 3
The council question is answered
Your council, the tree's height and trunk, its distance from the house and the species decide whether a permit or an exemption applies.

- 4
You get it in writing
Scope, timber, stump and date on one page, and nothing is booked until you have said yes.

Hamilton South questions
The Garden Suburb rules
Is the front garden tree protected?
Often. Hamilton South is a heritage conservation area, and Newcastle's exemptions for trees near buildings, storm damage and weed species do not apply where the tree is visible from the street or other public areas other than a lane.
Who owns the big trees on the verges?
They belong to the council. The DCP protects the appearance of Parkway Avenue, including the road verges, street trees, bridge abutments at Cottage Creek and the central median.
Can a truck get to the back yard?
Often, because of the side driveways. Where it cannot, the timber is cut small and carried out to the street.
