Homes that back onto the fire edge

In November 2012 dozens of Edgeworth residents left home after a bushfire jumped its containment lines and burnt within metres of their properties. On the western side, crews took up defensive positions near a retirement home, though nobody was ordered out.

Fire came again in January 2018, a bushfire started by a car fire and treated as suspicious. Both fires ran in bush that still meets the back fences here, which is why the trees closest to those fences get the most attention.

Edgeworth questions

Rezoned land and native trees

Why is some Edgeworth land zoned for conservation?

An amendment to the Lake Macquarie LEP rezoned land here for low and medium density housing and also for conservation of environmentally sensitive areas. Trees on that conservation land are not part of an ordinary yard job.

Does a native gum need council approval?

It can. Lake Macquarie City Council says a tree application may be required before pruning or removing a native tree or Araucaria pine species on private land.

Can trees near the house be cleared for fire?

Where a property is in a 10/50 entitlement area, trees within 10 metres of a home can be cleared. The RFS says to check its online tool on the day you are clearing, as the area can change.
