Tree work in Speers Point
Smelter ground south of Cockle Creek
The EPA says aerial fallout of lead oxide from the former smelter reached surface soils on properties in Boolaroo, Argenton to the north and Speers Point to the south. A sample from Tredinnick Oval, thought to be black slag, held 17,500 ppm lead.
For tree work the soil matters more than the timber. Stump grinding mixes earth through the chips, so grindings from a yard here are better taken away or kept on that yard than spread as garden mulch elsewhere.
Beside the park, a large area of low-lying swampy land was bought by council in 1938, filled in and added to the reserve. Filled ground near the lake can stay soft, which affects where a machine is set down.

Speers Point questions
Poisoned trees on the shared path
What happened to the trees on the lake path?
Seven trees on the shared pathway between Warners Bay and Speers Point were drilled and poisoned, with three mature eucalypts now dead and a large casuarina expected to die. Those are council trees, not part of a private job.
Is a tree that threatens the house treated differently?
Under the state vegetation SEPP, a permit or approval is not required to remove vegetation the council is satisfied is a risk to human life or property. It is the council's judgement, not the owner's.
Does a casuarina need approval?
Casuarinas are native, and Lake Macquarie City Council says an application may be needed before work on a native tree or Araucaria pine species on private property.
