Tree work in Maitland

Old gardens behind a flood levee

In March 2019 a mature lemon scented gum at Cintra House, a state heritage listed property, was lopped back, and the state heritage office said it was looking into the matter. Council had approved the work with conditions, because the tree carried a high risk of building damage associated with sudden branch drop.

Much of the old town sits inside the Central Maitland Heritage Conservation Area, listed in the Maitland Local Environmental Plan. Maitland City Council sets its own rules for trees there, and they are checked for the address before a quote.

Maitland questions

Floods and the levee

Does the levee keep big floods out?

Not all of them. A council works manager has said the existing levee would not save Maitland in a one-in-100-year flood. Ground that has sat under water is soft around the roots, so a big gum on low ground is worth checking once it dries.

When was the town last evacuated?

In June 2007, when a levee was feared breached, approximately 6000 people were evacuated from Maitland. Fallen trees and limbs from a flood like that are dealt with after the water has gone and access is safe.

Can a gum near the house be kept?

Often. Dead wood and the heaviest limbs over the roof can come off while the tree stays, which is usually the first thing a quote considers.
