Cooranbong questions
Fire risk on the west side of the lake
Is Cooranbong in a high bushfire risk area?
Parts of it. The Rural Fire Service's 2025 risk assessment for Lake Macquarie found bushland from Cooranbong to Martinsville, on the western side of the city, at high risk of bushfire.
Do I need a permit for a gum here?
Possibly. In Lake Macquarie a tree application may be required before pruning or removing a native tree or Araucaria pine species, and the council leaves it to the owner to identify if a tree is native before work starts.
Can the bushfire rule be used to clear near the house?
Only inside a 10/50 entitlement area. There, trees within 10 metres of a home can be cleared without approval, and the RFS says to check its online tool on the day you are clearing.
