Banksias on the dunes

Council investigated the illegal removal of four mature coastal banksias from dunes at Swansea Heads, trees thought to be up to 100 years old and the tallest in the area. Those were public trees on public land.

Banksias are native, and in Lake Macquarie native trees can need an application before work. It is the owner's responsibility to identify if a tree is native, and council does not run a species identification service.

Swansea Heads questions

Seawall, fossils and storm hazards

What happened at Reid's Reserve?

Storms damaged the reserve, and later waves overtopped the wall and left the park fenced off for close to two years. Salt and wind on that headland are hard on garden trees too.

What are the fossil stumps?

The LEP lists numerous fossil tree stumps preserved in situ beside a public reserve as an archaeological heritage item. They are rock now, protected as heritage, and not part of any private job.

Is a dangerous tree treated differently?

Under the state vegetation SEPP, approval is not needed to remove vegetation the council is satisfied is a risk to human life or property. That call is the council's, so ask council before cutting.
